Mystery calling: hear what your customers hear

For many customers the phone is their first contact with your business. Often the last, too, when nobody picks up or the call ends with “please send us an e-mail”.

Mystery calling is a test call in which an evaluator phones as an ordinary customer and assesses availability, helpfulness, knowledge and sales skills against a scenario. WENO-YUNO records the calls and turns the results into call scripts and training.

Who we call

  • Call centres and customer lines
  • Hotel front desks and reservations
  • Branches, stores and dealerships
  • Sales lines and enquiry forms with callback

What we assess

  • Availability: rings, waiting time, whether they call back
  • Greeting, introduction and tone of voice
  • Needs analysis and a concrete offer
  • Handling objections and agreeing a next step
  • Goodbye, call-script compliance and accuracy of information

Digital channels

We test e-mail, chat and AI chatbots as strictly as people

Customers often write before they call. And more and more often, an AI answers. We check that it works the way you think it does.

E-mail and forms

How long until a reply arrives? Is it specific, with a price and next step, or a generic template?

Website chat

Does the operator reply quickly and to the point? Do they lead to a purchase or send you to the hotline?

AI chatbots

Does the bot tell the truth about prices and terms? Does it know when to hand over to a human? Does it make things up?

From recording straight to training

A call recording is the strongest training material you can have. Staff hear themselves and understand more than from any spreadsheet.

Based on the results we prepare a call script, showing how to lead a customer call effectively, plus a short training session on the most common mistakes. A few weeks later we repeat the calls and you see the difference in the numbers.

A typical start is 3 to 10 test calls at different times of day.

Mystery calling FAQ

What is mystery calling?

Mystery calling is a test call in which an evaluator phones a call centre, front desk, branch or sales line as an ordinary customer. They assess availability, helpfulness, knowledge, sales skills and call-script compliance. We record the call, so you have an exact record.

Why is mystery calling a good first step?

It is fast and affordable. You soon see how many calls go unanswered, how many enquiries end without an offer and where staff lose the customer. Results translate straight into a call script and training.

Do you test e-mail, chat and AI chatbots?

Yes. We send test enquiries by e-mail and web form, write in live chat and test AI chatbots. We measure response time, accuracy, tone and, above all, whether the conversation leads the customer to a purchase, booking or meeting.

How do you test an AI chatbot?

We prepare a set of realistic questions, from simple to tricky: prices, complaints, exceptions, vague requests and attempts to confuse the bot. We assess whether it answers truthfully, follows your rules, hands over to a human when it should and doesn't make things up.

Do you record calls?

Yes, where the brief allows. Recordings sit next to each evaluation in the online system and are the best training material, because staff hear exactly how the call went.

For new clients

Try mystery shopping at one location before you decide

You don't have to commit to a programme for your whole network. A pilot shows you what really happens, and shows you how we work.

Pilot mystery

  • 1 location, hotel or call centre
  • 2 in-person visits or 3 mystery calls, following your scenario
  • Results in our online system, with photos and recordings
  • 30-minute debrief with what to fix first
  • If you continue, we deduct the pilot from your first month

Free tip: a 5-minute test you can run today

Before you contact us, run a small mystery yourself. Ask a friend to call your business or front desk as an ordinary customer, and check:

  1. Did someone answer within three rings?
  2. Did they introduce themselves and ask how they can help?
  3. Did they ask at least one question to understand what the customer needs?
  4. Did they offer a concrete solution, date or price, not just information?
  5. Did they offer something extra, or take contact details for a next step?
  6. Did they say goodbye, wish a nice day and invite the customer back?

Two or fewer “yes” answers usually mean customers leave empty-handed. Send us your result and we will tell you, free of charge, where to start.
